Judo

We run two judo programmes in South London in partnership with the British Judo Association.

At Ernest Bevin College, former pupil, Olympian and Commenwealth gold medalist Winston Gordon leads the Greenhouse coaching team. Winston, who competed for Team GB in the 2012 Olympic Games, uses judo to teach tolerance and discipline in the sport, school and the community.

He said: “Judo gives young people the discipline and self confidence to engage with a wide range of people from all walks of life. It promotes tolerance and discipline – and young people notice the positive difference on the mat, in the classroom and at home.”

His coaching and that of his coaching team is reaping benefits with sixth-form student Adam becomming Junior National Champion in the under 81kg category.

Fellow GB team mate Darren Hawney has recently started Greenhouse’s second judo programme at a neighbouring school for children with emotional and behavioural learning difficulties.
