Research and evaluation

Greenhouse has undergone rigorous research carried out by Ottaway Strategic Management since 2007 to measure our impact on the lives of young people.

School data, case studies, questionnaires and focus groups have confirmed that 'Greenhouse is changing lives' by:

  • Raising aspirations and achievements
  • Developing positive life skills
  • Improving behaviour and attitudes
  • Developing technical skills and talent

Facts and figures

10,000 young people attended 41 full-time programmes in 30 schools and five community clubs, increased from 7,600 the year before.

Raising aspirations and achievements

8 out of 10 young people are getting better grades with Greenhouse, gaining at least one grade and in many cases two grade points.

Developing life skills

Parents, guardians and teachers confirm the social value of Greenhouse, reporting it gets young people ‘off the street’ by diverting them from crime and getting them involved in a purposeful activity offering commitment, teamwork and personal development.

Improving behaviour and attitudes

  • 25% reduction in the number of poor behaviour reports
  • Teachers report greater self-discipline, control of anger and improved attitudes
  • Timekeeping improved by 23%
  • Attendance improved by 17%
  • 9 out of 10 young people say they feel better about themselves with Greenhouse

Developing technical skills and talent

Sports skills and fitness scores improved by an average of 25%.

Reaching out to young people from marginalised groups

Greenhouse serves young people living in deprived areas where most young people live on council estates, half live with a single parent and 40% receive free school meals (compared with 13% nationally).

  • Almost two thirds are black, Asian or from an ethnic minority
  • 400 have severe learning difficulties requiring full-time support
  • 68% are boys and 32% are girls

About this study

The 2008-2009 findings are based on:

  • 3 school case studies measuring data over two years
  • 1006 questionnaires
  • 5 focus groups including young people, parents and teachers

This is compared with one school case study, 647 questionnaires and three focus groups the year before.
