Frequently asked questions

How much time do I need to give?

From two hours per month to full-time, depending on the role that you wish to fulfil. Each role description will specify the time required each week or month, and the length of commitment that we are looking for. For roles that involve working with our young people, both parties get the most out of the experience by building bonds over time, so we hope that volunteers in these roles will be able to stay for the whole academic year although we will be flexible where we can.

What skills and experience do I need?

Enthusiasm, commitment and a willingness to learn are the most important qualities required to be a Greenhouse volunteer. Each role description details what skills and experience, if any, are required for a particular role. We will give you training and support to fulfil your role and aim to provide you with new skills and experience, as well as utilising your existing strengths. Role descriptions are available from Helen on 020 85766118 or email volunteer@greenhousecharity.org

What support and training will I receive?

We will introduce you to Greenhouse, your role and place of work, and the policies and procedures that you need to follow. You will receive ongoing support and feedback from your manager and the Volunteer Manager. We will endeavour to include you in team meetings, provide you with opportunities to attend internal training sessions and gain accredited qualifications relevant to your role.

I have skills to offer that you are not advertising for. Can I help?

If you have other skills, knowledge or experience that is relevant to our work please let us know. Occasionally we can create an opportunity for you if it is mutually beneficial to do so.

Will my expenses be reimbursed?

We offer to reimburse you for reasonable travel costs to and from your place of voluntary work, and for any travel that you undertake as part of your role. If you work for more than four hours and over the period 12:30-1:30pm you may claim up to £5 for lunch. Receipts must be provided in order to reclaim expenses, in accordance with the expense policy which is available on request. You should not be left out of pocket through volunteering with Greenhouse.

What is a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check and will I need one?

A Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check is a background check commonly run by organisations involving young people or vulnerable adults to assess an individual's suitability to fulfil a particular role. Individuals fill in a CRB disclosure application form provided by the organisation they wish to work with, which gives permission for the CRB to release information about their background. Within a few weeks the CRB issues a disclosure detailing that person's criminal records, and this information allows organisations to assess the person's suitability to fulfil a particular role.

It is our policy that any person wishing to take on a role working with our young people or their details undergoes a CRB check. The results of the check can take two to twelve weeks to be processed, and must be received before you can begin such a role. If you have an enhanced disclosure from another organisation that has been issued within the last six months, we can assess your suitability based on those results and you may be able to begin your role while we carry out our own CRB check.
